Guam Homeschool Independent Resource Center
Guam Homeschool is an independent resource center for homeschoolers on Guam. It is our family project, using our driving school office and classroom as our facility.
We are inclusive and do not homeschool under any religious or philosophical banner. Our doors and phone lines are open to anyone who needs our services.
It is operated by Leslie and Colleen Smith, who have homeschooled five children over the course of more than twenty years, most of that time on Guam. We have used a wide variety of curricula and programs over the years, and we collect materials that may be of interest to homeschoolers. The result is we have an excellent library of resource samples, catalogues, books and other resources. We also have computer stations and Wi-Fi internet so people can explore online resources as well.
We are aware that many military families come to Guam and intend to homeschool their family while stationed on Guam. For many of these families, they will only homeschool while here, and plan to go back to their regularly-scheduled program when they leave Guam. Our center is especially helpful to families who are new to Guam and/or new to homeschooling. We want to make it unnecessary for parents to become experts at homeschool issues if they intend to homeschool temporarily while on Guam. It can be a strange experience to come to Guam; we are American soil, but located in Asia. We are happy to help families get oriented to the unique style of living on Guam.
In addition to our offer of advice, assistance and support, we have Beach Fridays. On Fridays, we invite homeschoolers to enjoy our beach and relax with us. Our facility has air conditioning, a lovely sand beach, an outdoor shower, barbeque and other fun stuff for a low-commitment hour or day at the beach!
Some other resources we have:
-An 80-key weighted piano available for music lessons (I also know a couple of excellent piano teachers who are available.)
-Color Laser printer and B&W laser scanner/printer/copier.
-Other Desktop publishing resources. (We will accept donations for use of expensive ink and paper, but will not demand it–within reason.)
-Driver Education resources, including a complete online course that is free to access. (Not free to get certification: we have to pay our rent.)
-Free coffee and tea.
-Art supplies and tables.
-Lending library including Christian and secular titles.
-A collection of educational games and toys for families and children of all ages.
