New Beginnings

New Beginnings was formed by veteran homeschoolers who have several years assisting, guiding and supporting new or struggling homeschoolers.

The thought of homeschooling your children may seem overwhelming. We know several questions are going through your head. Can I really do this? Where do I get curriculum? What about socialization? I’ve been schooling for a while now, but I’m still struggling, how do I find my balance? Let us guide you in a gentle way to get your questions answered.

We are here to educate you, as well as be a support group for YOU, the homeschooling mom. Groups exist abundantly for children, but you are going to need support and guidance for yourself.

Monthly workshops address all of the above issues as well as other significant concerns that you may find in your homeschool journey.

By joining New Beginnings, we are confident you will feel better equipped to successfully homeschool your children.

1. What is New Beginnings?

A support program designed to help the new or struggling homeschool parent navigate as they embark on their homeschool journey.

We provide support and help either at one of our physical locations or through our web workshops and also provide support between workshops via our New Beginning Yahoo group as an additional feature to our program.

2. Is it JUST a support group?

No. It is education, a program, a curriculum laid out with topics that you consider in going through the two Student Manuals you receive with registration. At a few workshops you have “homework”. :o)

Southeast Texas Home School Association

In 1983, several home-school families met to begin the organization now known as Southeast Texas Home School Association, SETHSA. It was not, however, until 1986 that SETHSA officially came to exist. SETHSA consists of volunteer couples who serve as the Board of Directors to service a non-member, subscription base of about 79+ home-school support groups.

The Southeast Texas Home School Association is a non-profit, 501(c)(3), incorporated, Christian service organization established to minister to the home-schooling community in the greater Houston and southeast Texas area. SETHSA is dedicated to the rights of parents to choose the type of education that is best for their children and to ministering to those choosing to pursue a home-based, parent-directed alternative.

SETHSA’s ministry provides support and encouragement in the efforts of teaching at home through hosting a yearly curriculum fair, publishing a monthly newsletter, and sponsoring of a spelling bee, geography bee, and Read to Succeed programs. SETHSA, also, periodically publishes a beginners’ handbook. SETHSA’s goals are to provide support and to help connect homeschool families with the local homeschool stores, support groups, co-ops, graduation sponsors, sport organizations, bands, choirs, robotic clubs, 4-H, and a variety of educational class providers. By connecting with these various groups and organizations, we hope to provide support and encouragement in the efforts of teaching at home.

In your endeavor to homeschool, please utilize all the information on our website to help you in this most important role. Remember the Teaching Pioneer monthly newsletter as well as our website is an excellent way to keep up with all the activities for homeschoolers in the greater Houston area. Use these tools to help you and your family connect to other homeschoolers in your area.

SETHSA holds its annual conference the first weekend of June; we hope to see you at this important event. As the year progresses, you will find important information about the conference through the Teaching Pioneer newsletter and our website. Make sure you don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about homeschooling and review an excellent selection of the curriculum available to homeschoolers.

APPROACHES TO HOMESCHOOLING

Traditional (sometimes referred to as “school at home” or textbook approach)– This is the most familiar to most of us who were in public or private school. This is the form of education where you buy a textbook or a set of textbooks, you sit down and do the reading, answer some questions at the end of the sections and take tests. In this approach, parents try to recreate the school experience at home. Sometimes they set up a school room and a school day that mimics what the public/private school looks like. Curriculums that are well-suited to this style include Bob Jones, Abeka and Calvert.

Charlotte Mason (sometime referred to as the Living Books approach)– Based on the teachings of 19th century educator Charlotte Mason, this approach stresses the use of “living”, “twaddle-free” books to educate children. The approach is summarized by Charlotte Mason in this quote: “Education is an atmosphere, a discipline, a life?” In this method, education is not a separate from day to day life. It is something that is pursued every day, all day. Rather than teaching History from a textbook, one would use living history books. Rather than learning about plants from a book, one would go on a nature walk. There are Charlotte Mason curriculum choices available online. Most notably, Ambleside Online (http://amblesideonline.org/) offers a free Charlotte Mason Curriculum.

Unit Study — Unit study is a method where all (or most) subject material is covered through one specific topic. For example, history, art, math, science, writing and more may be covered through the study of airplanes. This approach usually involves a lot of creativity, building things, making things and crafts. It is especially well-suited for families teaching multiple grade levels simultaneously. There are many websites available online that will provide free help in planning your own unit studies. Or there are pre-written unit studies that you can purchase. Konos is a unit study-based curriculum. Five in a Row is a unit study program based on reading the same classic children’s book every day for five days and covering different subjects each day. Amanda Bennett has written many prepared unit studies that may be a good way to check out if unit studies are a good fit for your family.

Classical — Classical education emphasizes tools of learning, known as the trivium. These tools are taught in three different stages: grammar, logic, and rhetoric. Different ages stress different aspects. In all, there is an emphasis on thinking skills, classical literature, and usually Latin. Curriculum choices you might want to look into if you’re interested in a classical approach include Veritas Press, The Well-Trained Mind and Tapestry of Grace.

Relaxed — An approach that emphasizes that there is no one best method for any child or any family. The family unit is stressed. The mom is still “Mom”, rather than a teacher. The dad is still “Dad”, not a principal or school administrator. Each child’s unique strengths are explored and built upon. Some relaxed families are very structured. Some are not. It depends on the individual needs of the family members. Relaxed homeschoolers may primarily utilize one of the other methods discussed here, or they may use a mixture, or they may change from year to year. Again, it would depend on the needs of the family members. There is no “relaxed curriculum”, per se. You can learn more about the Relaxed approach reading books by Dr. Mary Hood, including The Relaxed Homeschooler and The Joyful Homeschooler.

Unschooling (also known as delight-directed or child-directed ) — Unschooling, in its strictest sense, is a philosophy written about by John Holt, who taught that children have a natural curiosity that drives them to learn what they need to know when they need to know it. It can also refer to many unstructured methods that are child-driven. There is no “unschooling curriculum”. You can learn more about unschooling by reading anything by John Holt. You might also want to look at a book titled Christian Unschooling or The Unschooling Handbook.

Eclectic — The eclectic approach is fairly self-explanatory. It means that you choose from whatever curriculum or approach appeals to you or suits your needs at the moment. An eclectic homeschooler may be simultaneously teaching History through unit studies, Math through a textbook and Language through a literature approach. Tri-County Christian Home Educators Association

the internet presence for the Tri-County Christian Home Educators Association (TCCHEA). TCCHEA is a non-profit home school support group organized to promote and encourage families in their efforts to home educate their children in Freestone, Limestone, and Leon counties, Texas. We are an unashamedly Christian home schooling support group. Our Christian faith is expressed in our Statement of Faith and in the way we live our lives, conduct our meetings, and lead events. We strive to provide support, encouragement, empowerment and friendship to our families.

Our group is completely supported by parent volunteers that seek to offer multiple learning opportunities for their children and to unite with other home schooling families in doing so. All leadership positions are held by Moms and Dads willing to freely give of their time in various areas to support the group. (It’s the involvement of both parents and kids that make our organization fun and worthwhile.) Because we are an all-volunteer group, the activities that we have may vary from year to year depending on what the parents are able take on for that year, if anything.

With membership, you can visit our other pages to read more details about what is currently being offered! If you can think of other activities that members might enjoy, please let us know. And be ready to volunteer!!

TCCHEA is now represented by more than 40 families who wish to educate their children independently, with a focus on both spiritual and academic excellence. Browse the public area of our site to learn more about us and about home schooling in general or join now! Benefits include.

As Texas home educators, we are very grateful for the blessing of freedom to teach our children at home. In order to maintain such freedom, we encourage our members to be diligent in their commitment to home school their children and to do so in a manner that upholds the Texas law. We hope you enjoy your home school journey!

SHARE (Sherman Area Enrichment)

Homeschool Co-op

SHARE provides a cooperative teaching and learning experience for homeschooling families in the Sherman area. Our goal is to share in the home education of our children through enriching classes, fun activities, and parental support in a Christian environment. We hope to enrich the lives of our children through classes that are best taught in a group setting, that share a teacher’s interests, and that fill needs of member families. The key to success is cooperation. Therefore, at least one parent from each family is expected to be involved and to remain on the premises during the times his/her children are in class.

All SHARE classes are taught from a Christian perspective (no New Age ideas, evolution, humanism, etc), but, in deference to the varying religious beliefs of our members, denominational doctrine is not taught. We welcome homeschooling families who share these views and who desire to enrich the education of their students in this environment. Please see our Frequently Asked Questions page to find out how our co-op works. Our handbook of guidelines is also online. If you have more questions, or think SHARE classes might be a good fit for your family, please contact us at info@sharehomeschoolco-op.org.

What We Offer:

Membership Options for PreK – 12th grade…. scroll to the bottom for more information.

Report Days  (for PreK – 12th)

On these days we meet at First Christian Church (FCC) at 9:45 to listen to reports prepared by the students.  These may be reports about a recent book they read or information they just found out about dinosaurs.  They can sing a song or recite a Bible verse or poem.  They can show us a science experiment or do a Power-point presentation about Australia. They can even tell us about the truck that Uncle Jo just bought them in San Antonio.  The point is to get our students to prepare information and get up on stage to present it.  This has really benefited our students as they move on to high school or college.  After the reports we order pizza, do crafts, and just spend time hanging out. We even have a picnic area outside with a playground. It is a fun, productive day.

Fieldtrips (for PreK – 12th)

Approximately once a month we will be going somewhere as a group to discover anything from a potato farm in Edinburg to an airplane museum in Brownsville.  It typically takes about 3 hours and we plan for a lunch afterwards.  You don’t want to miss these.

Co-ops (for K – 12th)

We have a Spring Co-op that meets one day a week for 6 consecutive Fridays.  These are held at FCC from 9:15am to 12:00noon.  They are classes that are taught by our moms or dads.  Each class is about 1 hour long with a 20 minute break between them.  Each teacher instructs for 1 class and during the second class attends a chat time where anything from organizational tips to curriculum choices is discussed.  The classes at Co-op may include subjects like Theater, Art, Science, Music, P.E., Cake Decorating, Writing, Literature, or Photography.  The students love them.  They are a great way to learn and get some classroom experience.  The fee for this is $30 per family.

Gymnastics (for PreK – 12th)

Our group gets a special rate at Palm Valley Gymnastics.  We have classes on Mondays from 2 to 3pm.  Students aged 4 and up will participate in a range of activities including the bars, floor, beam and other fun exercises.  While they learn and exercise, the adults watch and chat.  What a great combination!

Harlingen Homeschool Academy (HHA) (for 7th – 12th)

For the 2013 – 2014 School year, we offer 7th – 8th grade clases for English and Life Science and 9th – 12th grade classes  English II, World History, and Biology.  Eigth grade students are also allowed to take World History for Hight School credit.  Classes meet at FCC on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 – 12:35.  There is a per class fee.  Each class includes homework that can be done on the days when they don’t meet.  So, you can check those classes off of your list of things to teach!!!  Check out the form on the left entitled Academy Classes for more information.

Kids Events  5 – 8 y/o, and 8 – 11 y/o)

Special Events are planned several times a year for different age group.  One mom is in charge of organizing the events, but any mom is free to plan them.  The groups are  5 – 8 year olds and 8 – 11 years old.  Parents are invited to attend with their other children, but the activities planned are only for those within the age range!  Have an older student?  See below.

Youth Events  (for 6th – 8th and 9th – 12th)

For our students 6th grade and up we have youth events several times per year.  These are activities set aside for our youth to just hang out and have fun together.  They might play games, go swimming, have a car rally, or roast marshmallows over a campfire.  Most all of our teens come to every Youth Night if at all possible.

Moms’ Night Out (just moms = )

This is a special night just for moms.  We get together to play games and just connect.  We bring treats which usually includes chocolate!!!  It’s a great way to take friendships and your knowledge of homeschooling to the next level.

Discovery Education Streaming Library (all ages)

Over 9,000 videos about Science, History, Spanish, English, and even Math are available to you from places like the History or the Science Channel.  They are on the internet waiting for you all organized by grade level and length of video. Regular Membership Fee of $70 per family per year.  We love the help from volunteers and the opportunity to get to know our members better by working alongside them, but we know that some years it is easier to give your time than others.   For this option, your oldest homeschooled child should be in Kinder and 5 years old by September 1st.

Gulf Coast Christian Home Scholars

Welcome to the Gulf Coast Christian Home Scholars Web Site!

GCCHS, Inc. is a Christian homeschool support group in the League City, Friendswood, Clear Lake, Seabrook, Pasadena, Santa Fe, Pearland, Alvin, Webster, Dickinson, Nassau Bay and Kemah areas of Texas. We have over 300 member families with children of all ages.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT: GCCHS, Inc. is a support group of Christian families sharing friendship, emotional support, prayer, home education resources, and group activities. We welcome all families who are seriously considering or who have chosen to home educate any or all of their children.

ABOUT US: GCCHS, Inc. is an inclusively Christian homeschooling support group. We are Christian in our approach to this group, homeschooling, and life in general. The leadership of this group agrees to a statement of faith prior to serving and agrees to make their decisions for the group based upon it. However, we do not exclude any family that desires to join our group, regardless of spiritual background.

GCCHS, Inc. is led by a volunteer group of seven Steering Committee members. We do not hold regular group meetings, but do have an annual kick-off meeting each August to introduce some of the activities that will be offered in the upcoming school year. Because we are a support group (and not a co-op), it means that all of our events are voluntary. We encourage members to find ways that they can volunteer to help. Activities planned for a given year will take place only if we can find a variety of members willing to help with a given activity.

We support various activities, clubs, parties, and field trips. These events are generally open to all family members, but some activities have limitations such as age of children, number of participants, etc. For more information on typical activities and the group in general, see the “More About Us” link on the left of the page.

If you would like to join this group, please fill out an online application by clicking on the “Request Membership” link on the left. Full payment instructions will follow once your application has been submitted. Additionally, a Liability and Consent Waiver must be signed and submitted as well. The payment and liability and consent waiver are to be submitted together.

Our membership year runs from August 1st to July 31st, but new members are welcome to join at any time of year. Our membership fee is $30 per year if you join or renew during the months of August through December. Our membership fee is discounted to $25 if you join or renew during the months of June or July (postmarked by July 31). If you join during the months of January through May, dues are pro-rated to $15. Dues are to be paid each year in August, with the exception of any member that just joined or renewed during June or July. June or July joiners or renewers will not be expected to pay dues again until August of the following year.

If you have questions about the joining process, click here to contact the New Member Coordinator.

GATE Home School Association

Welcome to GATE Home School Association!

We are a Christian cooperative education group located in Allen, TX. We offer classes for home school students grades 1-12. We invite you to learn more about us through our website.Throughout Scripture, the GATE is a strong image. It is a meeting place—where leaders contemplate, transactions are made, relationships are built. It is an access point—open to those who desire community, but a defense against invaders. It is an image of our faith—Jesus himself being the gate for His sheep, and encouraging us to go through the narrow gate.

This association was created to be a place of meeting, to provide access, and to encourage people to walk in faith. Our members are gatekeepers, watching and providing a place of Christian community for all who enter. May we show the strength and glory of the Lord as we work together to educate our children and enrich families.

Purpose

We are a non-profit association based in Allen, Texas, created to provide cooperative education opportunities for Christian home schooling families in the surrounding areas. We strive to be a small but quality cooperative where parents come together to use their God-given talents and abilities to train and teach home schooled students about the world God has given us.

South Copper Canyon!

Mission

Classical Conversations exists to know God and make Him known.

Our purpose is to lead the home-centered education movement by equipping parents and students with the classical tools of learning needed to discover the order and beauty of God’s creation and to inspire others to do the same.

It’s a Model

CC combines classical learning and a biblical worldview.

The Classical model emphasizes mastery of facts during the early years. This gives students a foundation on which to build later learning and a solid framework where ideas can be categorized and compared as students mature.

It’s a Method.

In CC Communities, parents equip parents.

Across the United States, Classical Conversations Communities exist to complement your home-centered education and connect you with like-minded families. Each community is facilitated by a trained parent-director, and classes are led by trained parent-tutors who model the classical tools of learning. Tutors have the privilege of encouraging students toward becoming lifelong learners while also encouraging parents in the classical teaching of their children.

Christian Home Educators Co-op (CHEC)

Welcome to CHEC Longview’s website!

CHEC is a group of over 100 families located in Longview, Texas, that meet together for monthly meetings on the third Monday of each month, during the school year, at 7:00 at Fellowship Bible Church, in Longview. We do NOT meet in the month of December. CHEC is NOT affiliated with Fellowship Bible Church. They are very generous to allow us to use their facility. Please contact Allison Goforth (see contact information below) for more information about CHEC. Please DO NOT contact the church.

At monthly meetings, we seek to minister to and encourage homeschooling families in their walk with the Lord and their journey in homeschooling. We stand on the scripture:

“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But, woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not easily broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-12.

Along with monthly meetings, we have a lot of other activities that are available for member participation. More detailed information concerning our statement of beliefs and requirements for joining can be found by clicking on the “Request CHEC Membership” tab.

We’ve made a few general items available on this public website regarding our organization. You will also find a few links to some great homeschool resource destinations.

Christian Home Education Association of Central Texas (CHEACT)

An Important Announcement from the CHEACT Board of Directors about the CHEACT Conference:

After 25 years of hosting local conferences and book fairs for Central Texas homeschoolers, the economics of these events have grown beyond the ability of CHEACT to continue bringing them to you. In such challenging times, we are grateful to be able to partner with like-minded ministries to continue the tradition of our annual conference.

The CHEACT board would like to introduce you to FORGE Ministries. FORGE is a new non-profit organization begun by several Christian families in Texas who believe education for our children is synonymous with biblical discipleship. This ministry will seek to educate parents through conferences with compelling speakers and themes so they are better equipped to disciple and teach their children.

We feel this partnership benefits our membership by allowing CHEACT to focus on local and regional support of homeschool families. At the same time, this partnership benefits Texas as FORGE Ministries takes the beginning steps in impacting homeschooling families across the state. We encourage our members, past vendors and potential speakers to visit www.forgeministries.org to learn more about FORGE Ministries and their upcoming conferences.

Please be in prayer for CHEACT as we seek where best to serve our members and the community at large. CHEACT is excited about this new partnership, and we hope you will also support FORGE Ministries with your prayers and by attending the FORGE ministries conference.

With an emphasis on relationship building, CHEWSA seeks to educate the whole person: spirit, soul, mind and body.

In the fall of 2013, we will be starting a new weekly enrichment program on Tuesday afternoons that will require participation from parents to help teach, plan, or assist with. This will not be a drop off program and will need team work and prayer to make it successful. The classes offered will vary on the session and who is leading. Some ideas include gardening, sewing, cooking, health, crafts, jewelry making, devotions, outdoor activities, field trips, photography, art, and a Christmas party. We are always open to new ideas!! We will also have monthly Mom’s Night Outs.

This is a password protected website that only members will be able to view.  Once you have submitted your application AND paid your $20 yearly fee toward the group, your access to the website will start. Bay Area Catholic Homeschoolers

Mission Statement

Through the guidance of the Holy Family, Bay Area Catholic Homeschoolers is an association of lay faithful, Roman Catholic homeschooling parents established to promote and support those families who are engaged in providing their children’s religious, academic, moral, cultural, and social formation. BACH accepts families who are actively enrolled in the RCIA program in their parish or where one of the spouses is Catholic and the children are being raised Catholic.

“BACH” has as its foundation and guiding principle total fidelity to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, primarily to the Holy See of Peter, and to the diocesan bishop teaching in communion with him. Through the functions and activities of “BACH,” it is the express wish that each of the faithful strive toward sanctification along the pathway of life that will bring us to our heavenly home in the company of the blessed Angels and Saints. BACH is a Roman Catholic Homeschool group.

“Since parents have conferred life on their children they have a most solemn obligation to educate their offspring. Hence, parents must be acknowledged as the first and foremost educators of their children. Their role as educators is so decisive that scarcely anything can compensate for their failure in it.”

BACH (BOERNE AREA CHRISTIAN HOMESCHOOLERS)

BACH is a Christ-centered support group that uses the Bible to provide the basis and standard of truth and values.

The primary goal of BACH is the development of Christian character in our children, where each child is led to a personal relationship with Christ and trained in scriptural principals and values. Another goal is to promote academic excellence, which is to be acquired as a natural outcome of responsible, consistent homeschooling.

Our purpose of meeting together is to encourage and support the families of those in pursuit and continuance of homeschooling by sharing experiences, pooling resources, and providing opportunities to build relationships with others whose values and perspectives are within the scope of the values and perspectives of this organization.

As a Christ-centered support group, BACH will provide encouragement, information, and appropriate experiences to anyone who may be interested in homeschooling, or is already homeschooling.

BACH requires an annual membership fee of $45.00 per family. BACH membership will allow you and your family full access to the website, class registration, field trips, newsletters, socials and so much more. This website will direct you to PayPal when you Request Membership. You will not be approved for membership unless the annual membership fee is paid. However, in special situations, BACH does award scholarships for those families that need it. To request a scholarship, please click on the Contact link at the top of this page to contact a BACH Board member.

Historical Note: Since its inception in 1987, BACH has functioned on the principle that parents are the authority for their own families and as such are to decide which activities their family will or will not participate in. When an activity is offered to the group, each family must decide if it fits into their plans and if they can submit to the requirements, if any, of the person offering the activity. The BACH Board dos not dictate requirements for activities, nor does it sponsor the activities of the group except in special circumstances (i.e.. Classes, Promotion, Graduation ceremonies). All activities are offered by individual moms/families who desire to bless the group with a certain opportunity.

ABC Homeschool

The ABC (All Because of Christ) Homeschool group was founded in 1995 by homeschooling parents seeking a personable support group in the Northwest Corpus Christi area.

ABC is a small group, but families find that this provides the opportunity to really know and rely on one another for information and help. ABC’s families homeschool for many different reasons, use many different curriculums and use a variety of educational approaches in teaching their children.

Activities for the children vary from year to year depending on the goals of the elected board, interest from member families, ages of children and the number of volunteers available. As with all organizations, activities for the whole group depend on those willing and able to plan and arrange an event. ABC families have managed to provide some invaluable learning opportunities for the children (parents as well). By grouping together, ABC families have also been able to provide activities such as Spanish classes, art classes and gymnastics from outside sources. Many families participate in activities not organized or sponsored by ABC such as 4-H, Scouts, Little Leagues (various sports) and are active members within their church groups.

ARCH Angels Apostolate Of Roman Catholic Homeschoolers

ARCH is a family-to-family apostolate located within the boundaries of the Diocese of Galveston-Houston and is faithful and loyal to the Dogmas and infallible Magisterium of the Catholic Church and the Roman Pontiff.

The purpose of ARCH is to provide support for Catholic homschooling families through a network of friends and to provide aid to the parents as they fulfill their vocations as the primary educators of their children. One of the ways this is done is through the establishment of smaller, geographic placed groups known as satellites to meet the local daily needs. In addition, ARCH offers area wide activities such as a Back to School Mass, Curriculum Fair, End of the Year Picnic and Mass, and a Graduation Mass.ARCH requests a small yearly dues of $20 per family, although no family will be denied membership due to financial hardship. The funds from the dues are used to underwrite a major function of ARCH, which is our annual curriculum fair. We understand the need for good quality educational materials for your family as we on the board are homeschooling moms too!

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray, and do thou O prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who wander throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
