Loving Education At Home

Welcome to our website. Loving Education At Home (LEAH) is a statewide organization dedicated to supporting and promoting home education throughout New York. One of our major purposes is to support a statewide network of homeschool chapters by and for home educating parents.

LEAH also provides:

  • Publishing a statewide quarterly newsletter, The Messenger, for member families
  • Conducting annual homeschool conferences – Upstate in Rochester and Downstate on Long Island
  • Monitoring and advocacy with the New York State Legislature and the State Education Department regarding developments on home education policy and regulations.

Our Purpose

Loving Education At Home is a Christian organization, the members of which are like-minded Christian home education support groups made up of families dedicated to observing the Biblical commands of Deuteronomy 6:4-10, Proverbs 22:6, and Ephesians 6:4.

We promote home education as the Scriptural design for education whereas institutional education is alternative to the home.

We believe that every family has the God-given legal and constitutional right to home educate in New York State, regardless of their philosophy of education or religious affiliation.

LEAH is not a church nor is this organization meant to replace the ministry of the local church to the home education family.

Purpose

Loving Education At Home is organized exclusively for the purpose of providing service and support to Christian home education support groups within New York State including but not limited to the following ways:

  1. By aiding in the creation and growth of Christian home education support groups through out New York State.
  2. By providing information regarding the legal climate of home education in New York State and in our nation.
    1. By encouraging home education families to seek appropriate legal counsel.
    2. By monitoring and advising the State Department of Education and other appropriate officials.
    3. By monitoring cases before family, state, and federal courts in this regard.
  3. By doing whatever is necessary to protect the future freedoms of home education in New York State and in our nation.
  4. By promoting the advantages of home education over alternative forms of education outside the home.
  5. By promoting sound, high quality home education programs by parents or legal guardians for the purpose of developing Christlike character, and which will satisfy the spiritual, intellectual, physical, and emotional growth needs of their children.
  6. By reviewing and disseminating home education materials and information considered vital to home educators, this serving as a resource to parents desiring to educate their children in the home.
  7. By publishing a state newsletter.
  8. By planning and conducting an annual state home education convention and other educational opportunities designed to provide information and training that will help parents and others involved with or interested in home education.
  9. By supporting accurate home education research and its publication.
  10. By instituting whatever other programs or services in the future as may be deemed necessary by the membership of this organization.

West Point Christian Co-Op

WPCC is a community of Christian home school families cooperating to educate, stimulate, and support one another in our calling to educate our children at home to “…bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” (Eph. 6:4) While remaining individualized and sensitive to each child’s God-given gifts and talents, it is our hope that this training would result in:

Knowledge and wisdom that reflect living by faith in God’s truth, as revealed in the Bible; and

Personal character which glorifies the Lord by showing forth the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

Although one of the purposes of the Co-op is sharing teaching responsibilities, our homeschooling philosophy remains that the parents – both Dad and Mom – are the primary educators of their Children.

We are not affiliated with any particular denomination. Our members may attend a variety of area churches including but not limited to Assembly of God, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic and a host of non-denomination Christ-centered churches.

One of the purposes of WPCC is to provide experiences that homeschooled children can only experience in a co-op situation. Students experience being part of an academically oriented class in a classroom situation with a teacher other than their parent; they have a ready audience for their academic achievements; and practice group cooperation and appropriate competitive skills.

Core classes include those best done in a group setting such as Gym, Drama, and hands-on Science. Electives may include art, music, book discussions, or home economics. Electives may vary depending on the parents involved. There may be opportunities such as spelling bees and science fair in the future as well.

What you can expect:

Emotional and prayer support

The benefit of one another’s gifts and talents to complement and enhance your own home studies Friendship for children and moms

An instant audience for sharing projects and practicing public-speaking

The disciplines that can by developed only when children work within groups; and the sense of responsibility and interdependence that group-work nurtures.

The multiplication of time, energy, and resources that only happen when we join together with others

What Not to expect:

A break from teaching

An excuse for getting out of the house (there are far better field trips)

A place to bring your children so that others can provide for them

WPCC is a place where we all support and teach together. The Co-op structure is supported by each family’s involvement. Without that involvement, the structure waivers; and the responsibility for making a successful program falls too heavily on just a few.

Syracuse LEAH

Statement of Faith

Our members do not have to share our beliefs in order to join. However this is the worldview we work from.

We believe:

The Bible to be the inspired, infallible, divinely preserved Word of God, the supreme and final authority for all faith and life.

That there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

In the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood on the cross, His bodily resurrection, His ascension, and His imminent bodily return in power and glory.

That man was created in the image of God, but fell into sin and is therefore lost, and only those who put their faith in Jesus Christ alone, not trusting in any personal works whatsoever, can be saved.

That God created man and woman after his own image, and that God has ordained marriage, consisting of one man and one woman, to be the foundation of the family and to be the only legitimate and godly expression of sexuality.

That salvation is the free gift of God brought to the sinner by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, Whose substitutionary death on the cross paid the penalty for man’s sin.

That the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to convict mankind; indwell, guide, instruct, and empower the believer for godly living and service.

In the spiritual unity of believers through our common faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and that individual doctrinal differences which may exist, outside of the aforementioned (numbers 1-6), should not hinder the unity of Christian home educators.

Saratoga LEAH has parent support meetings on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at New Horizon Church located at 150 Perry Rd Saratoga Springs, NY. At the meetings we discuss topics that pertain to homeschooling, plan activities, ask for advice and suggestions, and share resources we have found. Parents can connect with others whose children are the same age and build a network of like-minded friends and fellow homeschoolers. We do offer separate childcare at the meetings for those who really need it, but the space is limited.

NYCHEA

Homeschooling in New York City is an incredible experience. Like the city itself, our community is diverse, talented and exciting. With over 300 families, NYCHEA is the largest homeschooling group in the city. Our members hail from every borough and from every point on the continuum of homeschooling–some are just starting out with young children, some recently pulled older kids out of school, others have kids in high school or college and beyond. Belonging to NYCHEA will give you access to a vast array of options for meeting your goals and chasing your interests as a homeschooler.

A primary benefit of becoming a member is access to our three email discussion groups. These lists are NYCHEA’s lifeline of connection to members. Every day, members post information about field trips, classes, and special opportunities for your family. In addition to postings about what there is to do, one of the email lists is for online conversations about anything remotely related to parenting and education (or any other topic you wish to discuss with like-minded parents). There is also a monthly newsletter that features stories about members and what they have been up to.

The long-term benefits of becoming a member of NYCHEA are numerous. Finding friends for your children. Learning about museums, parks, historic buildings and sites of interest you may otherwise never have heard of. Being able to participate in classes and activities that pursue your child’s interests and passions. Benefiting from the wisdom of other parents who have already been through the stages that you are experiencing now.

NYCHEA has a council that meets several times throughout the year. (In fact, we encourage every parent to volunteer for Council for at least one two-year stint). We also have monthly member-only meetings meant to be wonderful social/educational opportunities for our membership. We have few expenses and the cost to join is low. NYCHEA is a non-profit organization.

We are sure you will find that NYCHEA is an invaluable companion along your journey as you homeschool in New York City. Welcome to our community. We can’t wait to meet you at our next event!

LIGHT

Whether you have always thought you would homeschool or you were thrown into it with little other choice or anywhere in between – this is a place for us to meet, greet and support one another. Although the primary goal is Long Island Homeschool and Home Education, there might be some areas of national interest and some off topic articles for discussion. This board is provided as an opportunity for the homeschoolers of New York and Long Island to use as a venue in sustaining their community – a gathering around a common goal.

Home Education is legal in every state of the US, although each state has their own set of laws, regulations or constitutionality behind how involved the state is with your homeschooling. There are many sites that list state by state information but that is not the purpose of this site. We do, however, have information on New York State Home Education Regulations.

The first rule of thumb when considering home educating, is to know that no matter what your circumstances, with some ingenuity, almost every one can home school their children. You do not need permission, a teaching degree, or have to hire a tutor unless you choose to do so. If your child is having issues that make your worry for their state of mental health, then remember you can pull your child out today and you still have 10 days to get your paperwork in order. You can take control of your child’s education and do what’s best for them. Nothing can beat one on one teaching modified to the child’s learning style. Children do better academically by home schooling.

Once you decide to homeschool, the two best things you can do for yourself and your child(ten) is:

Give your child some time to “deschool.”

Learn the NYS Home Education Regulations as best as you can. Never stop learning them throughout your homeschool years.

In reference to the first item, this means you are going to resist the urge to feel like you have to be doing something every second of their ‘school’ time. I’m going to let you in on a little secret… after working with hundreds of children over my decade+ of home schooling I can emphatically say that children will learn at their own pace and method no matter how many rewards and punishments you dole out. The trick is to learn how each child learns, which is done more easily in a home school setting.

Of course there are some classes you will take with other homeschoolers since it’s fun to learn certain subjects in groups and have time to play and hang out together when the workshop is over.

If you’re well entrenched in the system of school or have always sought out alternative education, leaving the system may or may not present challenges for you and your family. It’s normal to feel nervous and afraid of what homeschooling entails; mostly parents worry they are not doing the best for their child since they are not a qualified teacher.

There are many resources that parents can use in the grades that might be too hard to teach and there are online classes for children of all ages. You don’t have to go it alone. Additionally, there is a thriving Homeschool Community in New York and on Long Island – and has been long before the digital age.

LEAP Homeschool

L.E.A.P. (Learning Excellence Academic Program) is a community of Christian homeschool families cooperating since 1996 to educate, stimulate, and support one another in our calling to educate our children at home to “…bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” (Eph. 6:4)

As a cooperative, of occasionally twenty to thirty families, L.E.A.P. meets every other Friday for a day of class group academics (“Regular Day”). On the alternating Friday, a member family has the option to meet for a second set of various activities both academic and extra-curricular (“Alternate Day”). This also allows for some High School Credit classes to meet every week. A family coming to both Regular and Alternate Day would have two Regular and two Alternate Days each month.

Classes are provided for children of all ages and grades, from Nursery through High School.

We are not affiliated with any particular denomination. Our members attend a variety of area churches including but not limited to Assembly of God, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic and a host of non-denomination Christ-centered churches.

Students experience being part of an academically oriented class in a classroom situation with a teacher other than their parent; they have a ready audience for their academic achievements; they receive report cards each semester; and practice group cooperation and appropriate competitive skills.

An increasing number of parents and children want an alternative to school. Our reasons are many, and we often differ widely in our views, but as parents we share the desire to take back direct responsibility for the education of our children rather than to delegate it to schools.

Calvary Christian School

Calvary Christian School is a ministry of Calvary Bible Church. Our programs are designed to
supplement and support the Christian family’s efforts in the education of their children. God’s
Word, the Bible, is the foundational textbook and guide for life and for education. Calvary
Christian School offers three programs for encouragement and support of local
homeschooling families.

Web site access/participation: This program gives home-school families online access and
opportunity to interact with other families that are home-schooling! Plus, you can attend extra
sponsored events hosted by Calvary Christian School beyond its normal Thursday activity
day!

Activity Day Program: Home-schooled students meet weekly on Thursdays and participate
with other home-schooled students in classes and activities that supplement their home
education endeavors. Parents participate by serving in a variety of ways while enjoying
fellowship with other homeschooling families.

Homeschool Administration Program : The daily educational program is done at home with
the parents overseeing the process. Attendance, tests, papers, etc. are submitted to CCS in
order to monitor progress. Report cards are issued, credits earned and records are kept by
CCS. Administration students are required to attend Activity Day on Thursdays and to take
yearly standardized tests. Students enrolled in the Home School Administration program are
considered part of Calvary Christian School as private school students. Calvary Christian
School is recognized by the State of New York as providing “substantially equivalent”
education. CCS education provides solid academics, sound spiritual principles, and special
attention to family and individual needs.

Whether you are new to homeschooling or have been homeschooling for years, CCS strives
to offer you support and fellowship as well as information and tools to assist you and your
family. We are glad you stopped by and would love to have you join us in one of our three
programs.

The Web-Site access program is included in the Administrative and Activity Day Programs.
The Activity Day Program is included in the Administrative Program. A family can participate in
the Web-Site Program without participation in the Administrative Program or the Activity Day
Program.

STATEMENT OF FAITH

Oswego County LEAH is in agreement with and has adopted the NYS LEAH Statement of Faith as follows. We believe:
1. The Bible to be the inspired, infallible, divinely preserved Word of God, the supreme and final authority for all faith and life.
2. That there is one God, eternally existent in three persons:  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
3. In the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood on the cross, His bodily resurrection, His ascension, and His imminent bodily return in power and glory.
4. That man was created in the image of God, but fell into sin and is therefore lost, and only those who put their faith in Jesus Christ alone, not trusting in any personal works whatsoever, can be saved.
5. Salvation is the free gift of God brought to the sinner by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, Whose substitutionary death on the cross paid the penalty for man’s sin.
6. That the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to convict mankind; indwell, guide, instruct, and empower the believer for godly living and service.
7. In the spiritual unity of believers through our common faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and that the individual doctrinal differences which may exist, outside of the aforementioned, should not hinder the unity of Christian home educators.
8. We believe that God created man and woman after His own image, and that God has ordained marriage, consisting of one man and one woman, to be the foundation of the family and to be the only legitimate and Godly expression of sexuality.

  •     Knowledge and wisdom that reflect living by faith in God’s truth, as revealed in the Bible; and
  •     Personal character which glorifies the Lord by showing forth the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

  • Emotional and prayer support
  • The benefit of one another’s gifts and talents to complement and enhance your own home studies Friendship for children and moms
  • An instant audience for sharing projects and practicing public-speaking
  • The disciplines that can by developed only when children work within groups; and the sense of responsibility and interdependence that group-work nurtures.
  • The multiplication of time, energy, and resources that only happen when we join together with others

What Not to expect:

  • A break from teaching
  • An excuse for getting out of the house (there are far better field trips)
  • A place to bring your children so that others can provide for them

WPCC is a place where we all support and teach together. The Co-op structure is supported by each family’s involvement. Without that involvement, the structure waivers; and the responsibility for making a successful program falls too heavily on just a few.
