DaySpring Academy

Hello/Welcome to DaySpring Academy

There is a lot of information on these pages to help direct you into the world of home education. Please read over the website including the enrollment handbook for particular details on DSA and how to enroll and what do do afterwards.

DaySpring Academy/High School is a church school in Alabama offering a family-based educational program for grades K-12. (Alabama Code Section 16-28-1). The law is clear on what is required by parents and church schools so please read over this information. We believe in the right of parents to make all the educational choices for their children. We support and encourage parents to actively take responsibility for the education of their children in whatever manner they believe is best for their child. We encourage and promote Family-Based Learning as a time-honored way to ensure that children learn at their level taking into consideration their maturity levels and individual abilities and family styles. An arbitrary system should not have a part in setting goals for your child in any way without your permission and control.

Because contrary to a society’s thinking any and all Grade Level information is simply a myth. There is no such thing as 5th grade math or 6th grade health or 2nd grade spelling or 11th grade history except to a system that is non realistic approach to ways children learn. Each system and often each school can decide what the teaching goals are and how to go about it. Home educators believe it harms children when used as the *only* method of teaching and gauging learning. Using a 5th grade math book is for guiding the parent in sequential information but in no way is it etched in stone to be taught only in the 5th grade. (Same for all other grade level subjects.)

Instead, we encourage parents to use a broad spectrum of materials — from traditional books to software to hands- on activities to field trips to simply letting a child direct their own learning. READ!! And then READ MORE!! Conversations!! WALK and TALK and discuss LIFE!!! These things alone will encourage a child who has had difficulty in the system in rediscovering LEARNING (Which has nothing to do with education!!) Each child’s learning is specific to them and to their age, to their maturity levels and to their particular life at the time — not to a system or a series of goals. We are radical in our stand on family-based education. We do not apologize for that. We do not apologize for supporting parents in all areas of family life. We want children to succeed and parents to connect with their children again. Life should revolve around the family NOT the school schedule or school bus or school lunch or school homework!!

Our main goal:

To help parents come out of the government-run, taxpayer-funded “schools” — and to help the families heal from the labels used against them and the abuses of this “system”. To FREE parents from a system that has chained them and their kids to arbitrary and very often hurtful policies. And so…..(You were waiting for the point!)…We strongly support the abolishment of compulsory attendance in a system that doesn’t work and produces children who dislike learning and instead create a child friendly, family inclusive and community building system of learning. We support families finding learning paths that incorporate all ways of learning such as academia, hands on, volunteering, individual pursuements of education and the tribe of people in a child’s life helping the learning process. We do not apologize for that. Not now. Not in the future. Please look over the information about DSA to find out if our school will fit your needs. If there is something you want to discuss prior to enrolling, feel free to contact me. Please READ all guidelines, policies and stands on all aspects of home education before enrolling with us. Be sure you agree with DSA on all levels and aspects. Be sure you are ready to take complete responsibility for the education of your child! There are many ways of home education including: traditional, child led, community or family teaching, volunteering, eclectic, unschooling and a combination of all.

A Final Note:

DSA is not for every home educator as we demand parents to take responsibility for educating their child. The first responsibility (requirement) is to read the handbook, the policies and guidelines and most importantly the Law!! Understanding the difference between private schools, the tutorial laws and the church school requirements will be the first step in understanding your responsibilities and the choices you must make. We are not a Christian school as we believe religions should be a matter between family members and how the parents want to direct and teach their own children. We do not endorse or support any one religious belief except love, compassion and kindness to each other. We support all belief systems and non belief systems as these are vital to our own individual families. (If you believe you cannot join a church school that is not fully Christian, feel free to call and ask for a referral in your area of another church school to fit your needs.). Our religious beliefs encompass all spirituality and paths to the Divine.

SMIC Academy

Welcome to the Home Page of SMIC Academy located in Hoover, Alabama, USA a suburb of metro Birmingham, Alabama. The state of Alabama recognizes three types of schools: public, private and church. The definition of church-school is: “Includes only such schools as offer grades K-12, or any combination thereof including kindergarten, elementary, or secondary level and are operated as a ministry of a local church, group of churches, denomination, and or/association of churches on a nonprofit basis which do not receive any state or federal funding.” §16-28-1(2)

Shades Mountain Independent Church sponsors two church-school ministries that meet the requirements of General Statute 16-28-1 of the Code of Alabama. The first, Shades Mountain Christian School is a traditional “on-campus” church-school begun in 1972. It is an ACSI member school and is SACS accredited. SMCS has about 350 students enrolled in K3-12.

SMIC Academy began enrolling students in 1997 and is the “off-campus” church school. As a church school, SMIC Academy oversees off-campus classes conducted by its faculty. There are currently 185 students of compulsory school age enrolled. Seventy-two students are in grades 9-12. SMIC Academy is a board-operated school with contract employees under the supervision of SMIC pastoral staff. SMIC Academy board and staff provide oversight and accountability in an organized and legal framework to parents who wish to take responsibility for either directly executing or coordinating their children’s education.

Parents are the primary faculty in the elementary years. While parents maintain the coordinating role in the junior high and high school years, many students complete some or all of their core high school courses in tutorials offered by Shades Mountain Independent Church Academy, through other educational providers online, or classroom settings including community colleges, universities, and educational cooperatives. High School students at SMIC Academy may take the EXPLORE, PLAN, and PSAT. College bound students take the ACT and SAT at the public locations.

The mission statement of SMIC Academy is:

Based on the exhortation of Deuteronomy 6:6-9, Shades Mountain Independent Church Academy (SMICA) is a church-based, family-centered, discipleship ministry that assists homeschool parents in fulfilling their calling to home educate their children according to the Christ-centered, Biblical worldview.

Welcome to Ridgecrest Christian School

Ridgecrest Christian School is a church school founded on Jesus Christ with a vision of aiding Christian parents in educating their children while equipping this generation with Biblical understanding and wisdom, academic excellence, self-discipline, and physical education.

The purpose of RCS is to minister to the needs of parents in the Wiregrass area who wish to take up their God given responsibility to educate their children primarily or exclusively within the home environment. RCS offers families the accountability and structure of a private school yet affording parents the influence of a home schooling format.

“And these words which I command you this day, shall be in your heart and you shall teach them diligently unto your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up” Deuteronomy 6:6-9

The programs of RCS are geared directly to the needs of parents and children who have chosen home schooling as an educational alternative. RCS assists parents by offering them a system of encouragement and support, a framework of structure and direction, a point of academic reference, a means of accountability, and a resource of information and training. RCS offers children access to group activities and learning experiences which enhance their academic, social, physical, and emotional development. The program includes but is not limited to co-op classes, standardized achievement tests, play days, special events, and field trips. In addition to activities for the students, RCS offers parent/teacher workshops, seminars and social functions.

Enrollment in RCS is open to a limited number of home schooling families which are committed to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and are in agreement with our Statement of Faith as well as our procedures, policies, and standards.

Mission Statement

The LFHSC is an association of like-minded Christians who believe in supporting one another in the education of our children. Every program we plan and provide is prepared through a Christian filter. If you believe as we do and agree or are comfortable with those of us who are in agreement, you are welcome to join us as long as your personal beliefs are not abhorrently opposed to Christianity (i.e. Satanist, white supremist, homosexual, etc.). LFHSC reserves the right to deny membership according to these Biblical principles: Rom. 13:10, Gen. 2:23,24, Titus 1:6, 1 Cor. 6:9,10.

Foundational Christian Beliefs:

1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;

3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:

10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.

11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.

12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?

13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person. 1 Corinthians 5:9-13 (KJV)

Alabama’s Homeschool State Organization

Christian Home Education Fellowship (CHEF) of Alabama exists to promote and encourage Christian home education for the glory of God. Whether you are considering homeschooling, just beginning your homeschooling journey, or are a veteran homeschooling parent, our goal is to encourage, inspire, and equip you.

CHEF of Alabama was founded in 1988 as a statewide organization to provide a connection among homeschoolers, which was especially needed in the early days of homeschooling when curriculum choices were few, legal battles were manifold, and communication was done by either snail mail or phone trees. To further meet the needs of Alabama’s homeschooling pioneers, the annual state convention was established. Curriculum providers offer invaluable assistance, speakers give encouragement, inspiration and training, while attendees walk away refreshed and ready to tackle another year of homeschooling.

After 25years of dedicated service, the number of lives touched by the work of CHEF has been immeasurable. In fact, as homeschooling grew by leaps and bounds, CHEF found it necessary to employ a part-time staffer to handle the growing number of phone calls from families seeking information, referrals, and counseling. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary in 2013, we do so with the same passion and dedication to the state’s homeschooling families as we have the previous 24. To God be the glory!
