Estacada Home Education

So you have decided to homeschool in Estacada, Oregon

Congratulations! You have chosen a great place to live, and a great way to train up your children. Here are a few tips for getting the most out of your decision to teach your kids in this wonderful little town:

Meet the homeschool community. You can subscribe to an email discussion list with other homeschoolers in Estacada by signing up at yahoogroups.com for the ehomed list. Or send me an email and I’ll send you an invitation. This is a great way to find out what field trips are available, and what local resources have worked for others.

Don’t be afraid of the locals. Businesses and organizations in Estacada have learned to love home educators and their kids. There are many charitable organizations, churches, and community service groups that thrive on the volunteer help of young and not-so-young alike.

The arts are booming here. The classical Con Brio Society hosts free monthly concerts by local musicians. Watch for signs around town, or ask at the Artsmith Shop on Broadway. The Estacada Junior High Auditorium is the largest in Clackamas County, is newly renovated, and serves the whole community. Every December, local churches come together with the high school concert choir for a Christmas Choir Festival, culminating in a heartfelt rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus. A local Fine Arts committee brings poetry readings, musical performances, and art galleries to town on a regular basis, as well as an annual Arts Celebration at the end of July, with musical and visual artists combining for a variety of stimulating activities.

Athletes and their fans have a lot to do, with school sports, Little League, Youth Soccer and Basketball, and local running teams that attend various marathons, including the Hood to Coast and the Portland Marathon. A new library is on the way, and park planning includes ideas for building a local skate park.

Don’t be afraid of the public schools. Estacada schools have gone above and beyond the state requirements to allow homeschooled students to participate to the extent they wish in academic classes, sports, field trips, music classes, and other school clubs and activities. In addition, Family Ed (VMSS) is a co-op school supported by the Estacada School District and Estacada Home Educators, which provides classes for first through twelfth grade students.

Show up at the gathering places. For preschoolers, you can find like minds and familiar faces at the library story times. The library also hosts a great summer reading program for grade schoolers, with stories, songs, and crafts at the Timber Park, culminating in a Renaissance Faire at the end of the summer on the library grounds.

Homeschooled teens are more often found at the Philip Foster Farm, where they dress up as pioneers, and demonstrate early Oregon activities such as corn grinding and apple pressing to school children from around the state every fall and spring.

By choosing to homeschool, you’ve opted for the best education you can give your children, and by living in Estacada, you’ve given them access to a warm, caring community. WELCOME

Emerald Eclectic Unschoolers

This is a list created for the sole purpose of connecting Eugene area unschoolers. Connecting, networking, discussion, activities, gatherings and event planning is encouraged.

This is an exclusive and secular list. This is not a homeschooling list, nor a Waldorf-unschooling list, nor a list for someone who does not know what unschooling is. There are other lists that fit those needs.

Acknowledging that there are families on varying locations of the unschooling spectrum, we are here to support each other on our unschooling paths.

Although the main purpose of this list is to connect Eugene area unschoolers, discussion on this list need not be limited to unschooling. Most unschoolers have strong opinions, so expect your ideas to be challenged. If you find yourself on this list but are not an unschooler, feel free to lurk and learn. Enjoy your stay!

Please note: Members marking No Email will be changed to Special Notices by the moderator. This is to ensure that major announcements get to all members.

LDS-OHEA

Our History:

During their 1998-1999 home school year, while seeking support in their home schooling efforts, David and Theresa Handy crossed paths with Utah-based LDS-HEA founder, Joyce Kinmont, who suggested they form an LDS Home school association in Oregon.

The LDS-OHEA was born!

Over the years, they arranged Annual Conferences, sent newsletters and encouraged the home schooling families who joined to share activities with one another.

In 2003, the Handy family moved out of state and the LDS-OHEA was handed to Becky McNeil, Interim President and 2003 Conference Chair. In the 2003-2004 year it was passed on to Ann Agent, current President. We continue to follow the vision and mission of the LDS-OHEA.

Our Mission:

Our mission is to provide encouragement, coaching and a support network of members and friends of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who home school now, or who may home school in the future.

Through our growing network, we will establish connections with like-minded home school resources, making the best tools and information available to those who wish to provide a truly outstanding educational experience for their children.

We will engage in appropriate outreach activities within the community, to promote the cause of home schooling in general, and to share our joy in the gospel with all who desire to learn more about the Mormon lifestyle.

Home Education Liberty Project

The Home Education Liberty Project is dedicated to the simple principle that children are not the property or responsibility of the state.

We believe that parents are naturally ordained to be the caregivers of children.

We believe that children are a gift from God and the state has no “compelling interest” in any child who is not being neglected or abused.

We believe that loving parents, no matter what their educational or economic level, will always be a superior alternative to the state .

We are committed to working towards complete educational freedom for children and families. We will not be intimidated or silenced by teachers unions, politicians or the educational establishment.

It is our position that home educators have proven beyond any doubt that personal, individualized education of children is immeasurably superior to assembly line indoctrination in government facilities. We have shown over and over that our children are loved, cared for and given far greater educational opportunities than any government program can provide.

We have been slandered and libeled. We have been accused of being drug dealers.

We have been ridiculed by bureaucrats who rely on an ever expanding infusion of taxpayer funds to prop up their failed system. And we have thrived, succeeded and demonstrated a commitment to our children with which no government agency can ever compete.

We have also watched the endless supply of tax dollars, siphoned off by public school unions, used to steal freedom and privacy from the most dedicated parents in the state.

We have seen positive legislation vetoed by a governor who was the recipient of thousands and thousands of dollars from the education monopoly.

We watched countless dedicated home school families work tirelessly to pass good bills and play by the rules only to have their rights smashed by extraordinarily wealthy public education operatives. Operatives who incessantly cried “poverty” while making some of the biggest campaign contributions ever.

And we said “enough.”

If you believe that the time has come to offer children true freedom to learn and grow and thrive, if you believe as we do that it’s time to stand up to the faceless bureaucrats who consider your children nothing more than a source of revenue, if you’re tired of hearing children referred to as “resources” and “assets” than we hope you’ll join us.

We expect a long and difficult battle, but we’re going to fight it. We hope we’ll have you on our side.

Genesis Zero Stage

Genesis Zero is designed to give students ages 4-18 basic skills and experience in acting, singing, and dancing. I teach out of my own curriculum; the MIDAS program (Music, Improv, Dance, Acting, Singing).

I (Miss Emily) believe that my job as a teacher is to give children skills that are not only applicable in the Fine Arts, but in everyday life, as well. I hope to equip them to become better performers with the ultimate goal of giving them tools and confidence that will help them become ambassadors for Christ.

The name of this class, Genesis Zero Stage Class, refers to John 1:1 (In the beginning was the Word…). This verse takes us back to events before the first verse in the Bible. The name of the class also has its roots in my choreography directions, when I tell actors/dancers to start the song “from Genesis Zero”, meaning the dialogue before the song starts.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

The Bible

We believe the Bible is the Word of God. We believe the original manuscripts of both the Old and New Testaments are verbally inspired by God, inerrant and infallible. We believe the present canon of Scripture, the Bible, containing the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments, is now complete and closed and is our only and final authority for what we are to believe and for the way we are to live. 2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:21, Revelation 22:18-19

Salvation

We believe, that in spite of man’s sin and rebellion against God, God has continued to love man, all men and women, throughout every generation and in every part of the world. Because of this love, God has provided for the salvation of man. We believe the Bible has been given so we would know the need for, the origin, the nature, the conditions, and the ultimate objectives of that salvation. Furthermore, we believe the salvation which God has provided for us is by grace, through faith alone in Christ, utterly apart from any human merit or work which man might do. Once a person has trusted Christ for salvation, he can never lose his salvation. John 3:16, Ephesians 2:4-7, 2 Peter 3:9, 1 John 3:1-2, 2 Peter 2:1, Ephesians 2:8-9, Titus 3:5, John 10:27-29, 2 Timothy 1:12, 1 Peter 1:3-5

The Trinity

We believe in One God who exists in three distinct Persons: the Father, His Son (the Lord Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. They are equal in Deity, each One possessing all of the divine attributes. All three are eternal, unchanging, and worthy of our faith, love and service. Matthew 28:19-20, 2 Corinthians 13:14 For a complete statement of faith visit Glisan St Baptist’s website at www.glisanstreet.net.
