Upstream Learning – Copper River School District

Upstream Learning – formerly Copper River Correspondence Studies – has been serving families for several decades, originally providing support to students in remote areas of the Copper River Valley. In the 1990’s the program began enrolling students statewide. We continue to serve home-educated students locally and throughout Alaska by offering friendly, individualized educational support to families. Our name helps locate us geographically, as the Copper Valley is filled with many rivers and streams, including the mighty Copper River. Upstream Learning also reflects that home-educated students follow a unique learning path, often “swimming against the flow” while moving through their K-12 years.

Our program offices are located in Copper River’s District Office building in Glennallen. Our suite of rooms includes a family room, classroom/library with many educational resources for family check-out, and staff offices. We serve students in grades K-12, including those with special needs. We offer flexibility in curriculum choices and personalized support for our families.

Ramona Henspeter is the certified support teacher for families. Ramona taught her three children at home from kindergarten through high school, and is a ‘home school Mom’ with many years of varied experience. Lanette Phillips is the program assistant, and Michael Johnson is our Principal and also Superintendent of CRSD. Our Parent Advisory Board consists of four Upstream Learning parents and meets bi-monthly.

Alaska Private & Home Educators Association (APHEA)

Purpose

The Alaska Private and Home Educators Association is a membership-based coalition of parents and others who have banded together for the furtherance of educational excellence through alternatives to the government-operated public schools.

Supportive Inter-Relationships

Provides means to foster contact between home school groups in Alaska. This is done through publications and the presentation of seminars. Conducts an annual convention which encourages family participation and includes the following: At least one keynote speaker who is well-known in the field of home education. Workshops conducted by the keynote speaker and by local teachers and parent educators. Curriculum displays. This is an excellent opportunity to obtain information from vendors knowledgeable in various curricula and to get a hands-on look at curricula and supplementary materials

Political Involvement

Fosters and protects a climate of non-interference for home education in Alaska by direct involvement in the political process. This is accomplished by providing information on issues and candidates and by acting as a liaison between home education and the Alaska legislature. Keeps APHEA members informed through bulletins concerning pertinent legislation and Department of Education activities.

APHEA Position Statement

Whereas it is a fact recognized by the Supreme Court of these United States that children are not the mere creatures of the state, and; Whereas it is the first responsibility of parents to care for their children and that part of this responsibility is the training and educating of their children, and; Whereas we recognize the high duty and right of all parents to direct the education of their children without unreasonable restrictions by the state, and;  Whereas we affirm the fundamental right of parents to provide for their children religious training without interference from the state, and;

WE, THE MEMBERS OF APHEA, DO HEREBY DECLARE:

Our intention to execute faithfully our parental duty to the best of our God-given abilities; Our intention to cooperate together to attain excellence in private education for our children; Our intention to resist any attempt by the government of these United States or the State of Alaska to disallow the freedom to exercise our parental rights in education; and Our willingness to collaborate to improve the climate of educational freedom in Alaska through public information as well as through legislative means.

Hupomone Homeschoolers

At Firmly Planted Family, we are passionate about homeschooling. But we’re even more passionate about following Jesus.

There are many homeschool cooperatives available to parents. Firmly Planted is a unique ministry to homeschooling families that is absolutely dedicated to the spiritual growth of it’s parents and students. At Firmly Planted Co-ops, families find academic support through parent-taught classes and a wonderful opportunity to grow in the Lord as a family through Firmly Planted’s original Bible study materials!

Each week at Firmly Planted Co-ops, we use chapel time to learn about God’s amazing love and character. Parents are encouraged to follow up on the chapel time at home using our Bible study program, “Firmly Planted”. Members receive a Firmly Planted Family Study Guide and a comprehensive workbook each semester as part of their membership.

ABOUT FIRMLY PLANTED FAMILY

FPF is a Christ-centered discipleship ministry dedicated to equipping families with resources that will encourage and equip them to study God’s Word and grow together as a family. Our mission is to see families “firmly planted” in the rich soil of God’s Word, and to see marriages and families thrive as they “send out their roots” by streams of Living Water.

Firmly Planted Homeschool Co-ops (FPHC) are dedicated to equipping homeschooling families through training children and parents in the study God’s Word. Our commitment to building strong families within an independent homeschool environment and reaching the lost with the gospel of Christ is the passion that drives us.

Firmly Planted Homeschool Co-ops are non-denominational, evangelical, para-church ministries. Firmly Planted believes in partnering with local Christian churches to accomplish its mission of equipping homeschooolingi families in God’s Word. Each FPHC co-op is designed to be a ministry of it’s sponsoring church.  The Firmly Planted Family Bible Study program was created by the Board and staff of Firmly Planted Family and is being used in families and churches around the world.

The History of Firmly Planted Family

First Class Homeschool Ministries (later named Firmly Planted Co-ops) began its first year of classes in 2000 with approximately 50 families and 200 members.

It was founded because of a felt need within the homeschool community for support and encouragement, and has grown to become a resource where members can find spiritual and practical information to assist them in their commitment to homeschooling and discipling their children.

The original co-op was a ministry of the church where Jay St. John was the Worship Pastor. With the oversight and partnership of that church, the co-op grew to over 250 members.

That co-op, which was started in Mount Vernon, Washington, is still operating today.

In 2006, the second location of First Class, First Class Clark County West, became the catalyst for the birth of the national non-profit organization that was known as First Class Homeschool Ministries.

Since that time, FCHM (now Firmly Planted) has grown to include co-ops in churches all across the United States and more recently, as far away as Canada and Germany!
